“She Is Not One of Us”: GMOA Distances Itself from J’pura Doctor GMOA denies any affiliation with Dr. Maheshi Wijeratne, the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital specialist arrested for selling medical equipment at inflated prices. The union vows not to shield wrongdoers and urges reforms in the health sector. The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has officially distanced itself from Dr. Maheshi Wijeratne, the specialist at Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital who was arrested and remanded for allegedly selling medical equipment to patients at exorbitant prices. GMOA spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe clarified to the media that Dr. Wijeratne is not a member of their association. He emphasized that the GMOA has no intention of interfering in ongoing investigations, including those led by law enforcement authorities. Rejecting any form of protection for individuals involved in unethical practices, Dr. Wijesinghe stated that such actions severely damage the reputation and trust placed in Sri Lanka's public healthcare system. He stressed that the GMOA remains committed to integrity and accountability within the profession. Additionally, the GMOA has submitted a formal letter to the Minister of Health, proposing concrete measures to prevent similar incidents and strengthen ethical standards in the medical sector.
