Former MP Harsha de Silva of Samagi Jana Balavega has criticized President Anura Dissanayake for allegedly abandoning his pre-election stance on debt restructuring. De Silva claims that the president had initially promised to renegotiate the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreement, but has now accepted it without any modifications or discussions.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, de Silva expressed disappointment that the government had agreed to the IMF terms without addressing any of the promised changes. He emphasized that this shift contradicts earlier commitments made by the president’s team, who previously opposed working with the IMF.
De Silva further pointed out that the government’s income restructuring plan, which involves collecting 15% of revenue, remains unchanged and criticized the disconnect between pre-election promises and post-election actions.
