- Reiterates the island-nation’s support for the establishment of a Palestinian State
(COLOMBO) Sri Lanka and Israel on Friday discussed matters concerning the safe return of Israeli hostages currently being held by Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.
The hostage issue came up following a meeting between the Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Israel’s Minister of Transport and Road Safety Brig. Gen. Miri Regev, the President’s Media Division said in a statement.
President Wickremesinghe on his part affirmed Sri Lanka’s unwavering commitment in advocating for the safety of the hostages. Furthermore, amidst the ongoing hostilities in Gaza, the President called for an immediate cessation of violence, underscoring the paramount importance of peace and stability in the region,” the statement said.
“Highlighting Sri Lanka’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, President Wickremesinghe reiterated the island-nation’s support for the establishment of a Palestinian State. He also emphasized the significance of ensuring Israel’s security, fostering a balanced approach to regional peace,” the statement added.
