Manusha Nanayakkara, Presidential Adviser on Foreign Employment, has raised concerns about the financial backing of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), suggesting that foreign entities previously involved in destabilizing Bangladesh may now be supporting the JVP’s political activities.
Speaking at a public meeting in Galle Neluwa, Nanayakkara highlighted the recent economic turmoil in Bangladesh, contrasting it with Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts under President Ranil Wickremesinghe. He emphasized that while Bangladesh faced rapid economic decline, Sri Lanka managed to avoid a similar fate thanks to Wickremesinghe’s interventions.
Nanayakkara also accused the JVP of receiving funds from these foreign entities, questioning the source of their financial resources given their extensive political campaigning efforts. He claimed that the JVP’s activities, such as organizing large meetings and providing food to attendees, indicate substantial financial backing.
“The countries that contributed to the downfall of Bangladesh might be behind the current activities of the JVP,” Nanayakkara asserted. He criticized the JVP for not disclosing their funding sources and for allegedly using these resources to influence public opinion and disrupt Sri Lanka’s political stability.
He further criticized opposition figures such as Sunil Handunnetti and Anura Kumara Dissanayake, suggesting that they are aware of the complexities involved in managing the country’s recovery but are still engaging in political maneuvers. Nanayakkara implied that these individuals are part of a broader effort to undermine Sri Lanka’s progress by aligning with foreign interests.
