In honor of Prisoner’s Day today (12), around 350 inmates will be released under a Presidential amnesty, according to Prison Media Spokesperson, Commissioner Gamini B. Dissanayake.
The release is part of the special state pardon granted by the President under Article 34 of the Constitution. The amnesty will apply to prisoners jailed for minor offenses, following an assessment of prison conditions across the island. This move aims to alleviate overcrowding and give inmates a second chance.
