Colombo, Sep 25 – China has expressed its willingness to play a constructive role in supporting Sri Lanka’s steady economic and social development, emphasizing its adherence to principles of non-interference and respect for the island nation’s sovereignty.
During a regular media conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian commented on the recent presidential election, which saw Anura Kumara Dissanayake elected. He noted that the election was conducted smoothly on September 21. As a friendly neighbor, China has consistently treated Sri Lanka with mutual respect and support.
Lin extended heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Dissanayake on his election and swearing-in as Sri Lanka’s new president, revealing that President Xi Jinping also sent a congratulatory message.
When queried about China’s confidence in Sri Lanka’s commitment to repaying its loans, Lin reaffirmed the long-standing friendship between the two countries. He stated, “We stand ready to work with President Dissanayake and his new administration to uphold the spirit of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, carry forward the traditional friendship between the two countries, forge greater synergy between our development strategies, deepen high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and strive for new progress in our strategic cooperative partnership based on sincere mutual assistance and ever-lasting friendship.”
