Colombo, Sri Lanka – Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has called on the leadership of the United National Party (UNP) to establish a unified front aimed at defeating the ruling party, known as “Malima,” in the upcoming 2024 general election. Reports indicate that several opposition groups, including the UNP, are prepared to support Premadasa as their prime ministerial candidate, contingent upon the formation of a common alliance under a shared symbol.
Former MP Saman Ratnapriya, closely associated with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, expressed his willingness to back Premadasa, provided they agree on a common opposition symbol. “We are ready to accept Sajith Premadasa as the prime ministerial candidate if he agrees to form a common opposition alliance under a common symbol,” Ratnapriya stated. However, he pointed out that the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) party prefers the “phone” symbol, which poses a challenge as alliances typically do not adopt the symbol of a partner party.
Ratnapriya noted that a decision regarding the common symbol is expected within two days, after which an announcement will be made. Meanwhile, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, the General Secretary of the SJB, has officially requested Wickremesinghe to step down from the UNP leadership to facilitate Premadasa’s takeover and the formation of a broader alliance. Despite these calls, Wickremesinghe has reportedly declined to resign.
Additionally, former MP Manusha Nanayakkara mentioned that some members of the UNP have suggested adopting the “elephant” as the common symbol for the alliance. This discussion highlights ongoing negotiations among opposition factions, aiming to consolidate their efforts against the current government.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the opposition’s ability to unite could be crucial for challenging the ruling party in the forthcoming elections. Further updates on this developing situation are anticipated in the coming days.
