Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando, Director of Communications for the Archdiocese of Colombo, has revealed that the report from the Presidential Commission investigating allegations related to the 2019 Easter Sunday attack, initially uncovered by the UK’s Channel 4, has mysteriously gone missing. Speaking at an event at the BMICH on Tuesday, Fr. Gamini stated that while President Ranil Wickremesinghe received the report and handed it over to the Attorney General’s Department, it has now disappeared.
According to Fr. Gamini’s sources, the report contained crucial evidence and information about the attack, and had the findings been exposed and properly investigated, several politicians would have faced imprisonment. He also disclosed that an individual named ‘Abuhind,’ who had communicated with Zahran, the leader of the attack, is considered the mastermind behind the 2019 bombing.
Additionally, Fr. Gamini pointed out that the newly appointed Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Ravi Seneviratne, holds important information regarding the attacks.
After Ranil Wickremesinghe’s election, two special committees were formed to investigate the Easter Sunday attack and related allegations. The first, led by retired Supreme Court Judge S.I. Imam, focused on the military’s alleged involvement and submitted its report in June 2024. The second committee, chaired by retired Judge A.N.J. Alwis, investigated intelligence failures and delivered its findings in September 2024.
