Lawyer Dr. Pratibha Mahanama Hewa highlighted the significance of Sri Lanka’s recent election, where the nation entrusted leadership to a southern political figure under the banner of the National People’s Power (NPP). He noted that this result sends a powerful message to the world about the country’s newfound political unity and stability.
Dr. Mahanama Hewa pointed out the inclusive nature of the NPP’s victory, as Members of Parliament representing the plantation sector and the northern region were also elected under its leadership. This broad representation underscores a shift in Sri Lankan political dynamics, with Tamil communities in the north breaking away from traditional affiliations and supporting a southern leader.
“The Tamil diaspora, which had historically influenced the northern vote, has not had the same impact this time,” he observed. This marks a departure from previous election trends and symbolizes a new chapter in the island’s political history, where voters across the North, South, West, and East have united under a single leadership.
President-elect, scheduled to present his policy statement on Thursday, November 21, is expected to outline his vision for the country’s foreign policy and financial strategy. Dr. Mahanama Hewa emphasized that this framework would align Sri Lanka’s international stance and economic approach with the new administration’s goals.
He further asserted that broad democracy has already taken root in Sri Lanka, paving the way for stable governance over the next five years. “The nation now has an opportunity to work under a proper vision to build a robust economic and financial foundation,” he stated.
Dr. Mahanama Hewa also noted that this political transition sends a strong message to global forums such as the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The new government, according to him, is in a position to respond effectively to past allegations of human rights violations, signaling a more unified and accountable governance structure.
The election’s outcome reflects a significant turning point in Sri Lankan politics, where ethnic divisions have been overshadowed by a collective focus on national progress. Dr. Mahanama Hewa expressed optimism that this political stability and unity would enable the government to address longstanding economic and social challenges.
“This is not just a victory for the NPP but for the entire nation,” he concluded.
