MP Ravi Karunanayake has defended his appointment as a National List MP for the New Democratic Front (NDF), asserting that it was part of an agreement known and approved by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, Karunanayake claimed that Wickremesinghe’s silence on the matter confirms his understanding of the arrangement.
Karunanayake emphasized that his re-entry into Parliament aligns with commitments made prior to the formation of the current government. He brushed aside criticism, stating that while a vocal minority opposes his appointment, “99% of the people” support his presence in Parliament.
Addressing calls for his position to be given to former Minister Thalatha Athukorala, Karunanayake criticized her, alleging she had changed parties and was therefore not suitable for the role. He did not elaborate on the specifics of her alleged party-switching.
The MP also dismissed concerns raised by some party supporters, asserting his commitment to fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to him under the NDF banner.
Karunanayake’s appointment has sparked debate within political circles, with critics questioning his suitability given his controversial past and the circumstances under which he left office during previous administrations. Meanwhile, supporters argue his experience could contribute to the new government’s economic and policy initiatives.
The former Minister of Finance has a history of being at the center of political storms, including allegations of involvement in corruption scandals. However, Karunanayake remains defiant, framing his return as a continuation of his long-standing commitment to public service.
