The Madiwela official housing complex for Members of Parliament (MPs) is abuzz as new MPs clamor for accommodations. Parliament sources reveal that 35 applications have already been submitted by newly elected MPs seeking residence at the facility.
Allocations for the official residences are set to commence on December 3. However, eligibility is restricted to MPs who do not own homes within a 40-kilometer radius of Colombo.
Currently, the housing complex, which comprises 116 units, is undergoing a rapid renovation to prepare for its new occupants. Reports indicate that repair work is being expedited to ensure the houses are ready for allocation.
The Madiwela housing complex has long been a coveted amenity for MPs, offering proximity to Parliament and essential facilities. While the demand underscores the need for housing provisions for elected representatives, questions are often raised about the costs associated with such renovations and whether taxpayers bear the financial burden.
With the first session of the newly elected Parliament underway, all eyes are on the allocation process and how efficiently the residences will be distributed to accommodate the growing demand.
