Sri Dalada Maligawa gold casket weighing over 86kg is presented in Kandy, with 65.224kg of pure gold and precious gemstones.
A magnificent Sri Dalada Maligawa gold casket weighing more than 86 kilograms has been presented in Kandy, replacing the silver-plated brass casket that safeguarded the Sacred Tooth Relic for more than two centuries.
A devout businessman made the historic religious offering, adding a landmark chapter to the temple’s long tradition of pious contributions.
Official certification from the National Gem and Jewellery Authority confirms that the Sri Dalada Maligawa gold casket contains 65.224 kilograms of pure gold, 1.480 kilograms of precious gemstones, and 20.822 kilograms of supporting structural materials.
Sri Dalada Maligawa Gold Casket Certified
The revered older casket dates back more than 200 years to the reigns of King Wimaladharmasuriya II and King Kirti Sri Rajasinghe during the Kandyan Kingdom era. Temple custodians have securely preserved it within the inner sanctuary to protect its priceless archaeological and spiritual heritage.
The offering was formally processed through the temple’s custodians, including the Mahanayake Theras of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters and the Diyawadana Nilame. Officials also notified the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs.
Thousands of local and international devotees are expected to visit in the coming days to pay their respects to the Sacred Tooth Relic within the breathtaking new Sri Dalada Maligawa gold casket.
