A cyclone is advancing toward Mullaitivu, causing heavy rains and strong winds that have led to significant flooding and widespread disruption across the district. The Disaster Management Unit has reported that traffic on the Mullaitivu-Vattuwakkal bridge and other major routes, including the road from Mullaitivu to Pudukudiyirippu, has been temporarily halted due to rising floodwaters. The Nandikadal lagoon road has also been submerged, exacerbating the traffic chaos in the area.
The cyclone’s impact has left 4,644 people from 1,495 families affected by the ongoing weather conditions in Mullaitivu. In response, 680 people from 218 families have already been relocated to nine emergency shelters, where they are being provided with temporary accommodation and relief supplies.
Authorities are working in close coordination with the security forces and disaster management teams to carry out evacuations and ensure the safety of residents. These efforts are focused on relocating people from flood-prone areas and moving them to designated safe zones as the cyclone intensifies.
In addition to the immediate evacuation efforts, the authorities have advised all residents to stay alert to further weather warnings, as the cyclone could bring more intense rainfall and flooding. Efforts are also being made to repair and clear blocked roads as soon as it is safe to do so. The authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and are prepared to take additional steps to ensure the safety of those affected by the storm.
