Fijian authorities are investigating allegations that a Virgin Australia flight crew member was sexually assaulted during New Year’s celebrations in Nadi, Fiji. A suspect known to police has been questioned in connection with the incident, which reportedly took place in the early hours of 1 January.
Allegations and Police Response
According to Fiji’s deputy prime minister, Viliame R. Gavoka, investigations are ongoing into claims that one crew member was sexually assaulted and another was robbed. He described the alleged incidents as “regrettable” and conveyed concern for the health and wellbeing of those involved.
Fiji’s acting police commissioner, Juki Fong Chew, confirmed that officers are also looking into separate allegations of theft and assault. A 32-year-old man is believed to be under police scrutiny regarding the reported sexual assault.
Virgin Australia’s Response
Virgin Australia has dispatched support staff to assist its crew and is cooperating with local authorities. Reports suggest three crew members were allegedly attacked while out clubbing in Nadi. They have since been asked to remain at their hotel near Nadi International Airport a standard procedure to ensure they remain available for police interviews.
Contrary to some media reports, Gavoka emphasized that the crew members are not being detained and are “in good health.” The deputy prime minister explained that they are simply adhering to their airline’s recommendation to stay at the hotel to facilitate the investigation. The affected crew members are expected to return home before the end of the week.
Union and Official Advisories
Teri O’Toole, federal secretary for the Flight Attendants’ Association of Australia, commended Virgin Australia for acting swiftly. She noted that, while this kind of incident is not unheard of, it remains rare and deeply concerning. O’Toole urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is ongoing.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of the situation but provided no additional comments. The Australian government continues to advise travelers to Fiji to exercise normal safety precautions, noting that opportunistic crime can occur particularly in urban areas and at night.
Gavoka reiterated the importance of caution, stating, “We, as always, remind tourists to exercise caution in nightclub areas and late at night.” Despite this troubling episode, officials stressed that Fiji remains committed to ensuring the safety of all visitors and residents.
