National People’s Power (NPP) Colombo District Parliamentarian Devananda Suraweera has defended the recent increase in taxes on alcohol and tobacco, highlighting its role in promoting family well-being and improving public health. Suraweera noted that the move has been well-received by families, particularly by wives, who see it as a step toward fostering healthier and more harmonious households.
He stated that while alcohol and tobacco users seek pleasure from these substances, the government plans to introduce alternative programs to provide similar enjoyment in healthier ways. These initiatives will be part of the broader “Clean Sri Lanka” program, aimed at enhancing the happiness and quality of life for citizens.
Suraweera further stressed that the health risks associated with alcohol and tobacco use necessitate such measures. By reducing consumption through higher taxes, the government hopes to improve the nation’s health and address related social challenges.
