nka’s central province owing to falling trees that had been uprooted owing to the ongoing wet weather in the island nation, police and health officials said on Thursday.
The separate incidents took place close to the country’s central hill capital of Kandy some 115 kilometres away from the commercial capital of Colombo on Thursday, they said.
According to the officials the age-old trees had fallen on a way side vegetable stall and two vehicles in the Teldeniya police division.
It was only in early October that a massive tree crashed on to a public passenger bus in the heart of the Metropolis killing five persons and injuring an equal number of others.
The incident occurred during the rush hour morning traffic where the bus from Colombo was heading towards the south of the country.
The incident triggered off an outcry from the public and the authorities later appointed a committee to survey the hundreds of colonial-era trees in the city and suburbs.
Officials with the Department of Meteorology in Colombo warned of more wet weather in most places in the country with several open water bodies nearing spill level mainly in the rural areas.
