It has been reported that popular singer Yohani de Silva faced a protest while participating in a music event recently in London.
The protest was reportedly organized by a group of LTTE supporters residing in the UK.
According to reports, the reason for the demonstration was Yohani’s connection to her father, former Major General Prasanna de Silva, who served in the Sri Lankan military.
Protesters accused Prasanna de Silva of being a war criminal involved in atrocities during the Sri Lankan civil war.
One protester had told the media, “Prasanna de Silva is guilty of genocide. Anyone who praises him or associates with him is attempting to cover up his crimes.”
The protest highlighted ongoing tensions surrounding Sri Lanka’s post-war history, as well as the global Tamil diaspora’s continued activism regarding alleged human rights violations during the final stages of the civil conflict.
Yohani, who rose to international fame with her hit song Manike Mage Hithe, has not publicly responded to the incident as yet.
