
The Elections Commission of Sri Lanka has announced that nominations for the 2025 Local Government Elections will be accepted from March 17 to March 20, 2025, until 12 noon. Notices regarding the nomination process for the election of mayors, deputy mayors, chairpersons, deputy chairpersons, and members for 336 local government institutions have now been published by the respective local authorities. The elections will cover 28 municipal councils, 36 urban councils, and 272 Pradeshiya Sabhas across the country.
However, five local government bodies have been excluded from the election. These include the Kalmunai Municipal Council, Dehiattakandiya Pradeshiya Sabha in the Ampara District, Mannar Pradeshiya Sabha in the Mannar District, Punakari Pradeshiya Sabha in the Kilinochchi District, and Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha in the Galle District.
Additionally, the security deposit period for candidates will be from March 3 to March 19, 2025, until 12 noon, excluding March 8, 9, 13, 15, and 16, which fall on weekends and the Poya Day.
The 2025 Local Government Elections are expected to be a significant event in shaping grassroots governance across Sri Lanka.
