England’s tumultuous journey in the World Cup took a delightful turn as they clinched a resounding 160-run victory against the Netherlands. It was a triumph that propelled them from the bottom of the table to a more promising seventh position, now in contention for a spot in the Champions Trophy.
England, although winning the toss and opting to bat, found themselves struggling to hold on to their wickets from the very beginning. Dawid Malan’s heroic 87 only got the English so far and by the 35th over, were down founded at 192 for 6.
Fortunately for England, they still had Ben Stokes at the crease. In his signature style, the England Legend crafted his maiden World Cup century while teaming up with the dynamic Chris Woakes to give Netherland a big target to chase.
Woakes chipped in with a handy half century and together the pair orchestrated a vital 129-run partnership for the 7th wicket. Their whopping 124 runs in the final 10 overs, dramatically altering the game’s trajectory, giving England a final score of 339 for 9 by the end of the first half.
Woakes, after his batting heroics, transitioned seamlessly to the bowling attack, spearheading an impressive new-ball spell alongside David Willey. Their combination of good seam placement and impressive lines and lengths set the stage, while also picking up two early wickets in the powerplay.
This pushed the Dutch into a defensive stance, piling immense pressure on the batters coming in, disrupting their rhythm and run rate, leading to a late-game collapse.
The Dutch side, despite moments of promise, succumbed under the relentless pressure applied by Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali, both seizing three wickets each. The last five wickets fell for a mere 15 runs, sealing England’s emphatic victory and just about securing their spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The match’s standout performances saw Dawid Malan’s resilient innings, Ben Stokes’ impactful century, and Chris Woakes’ all-round brilliance, not only with the bat but also in equaling Ian Botham’s record for the most wickets in World Cups for England while Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid delivered the final blow.
