The Dambulla police raided a large-scale illegal liquor distillery operating in a two-storey house located in the D4 Ela Athuparaya area, Dambulla, on the 21st, following a tip-off.
The distillery is reportedly owned by a candidate running for the Dambulla Municipal Council and has been operating secretly for some time.
During the raid, the police seized approximately 800,000 milliliters of gota, 20 bottles containing 15,000 milliliters of liquor, along with one can, two drums, four barrels, and other related equipment.
The owner of the house managed to escape before the raid, and authorities believe he is associated with the 24-member Malima group contesting for the Dambulla Municipal Council.
The candidate’s wife, who was present during the raid, was arrested but later released on police bail. She has been ordered to appear in court next Wednesday.
