Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has lost its right to host the Under 19 World Cup in January 2024, the International Cricket Council (ICC) declared at a meeting in Ahamedabad this afternoon.
The ruling did not come as a surprise as the ICC had indicated that Sri Lanka which stands banned will have to forego organising the tournament.
The meeting was attended by SLC president Shammi Silva who is currently under a government probe over financial malpractices, widespread corruption, dictatorship and nepotism.
Calls to order Silva to appear before the country’s Parliamentary Privileges Committe have also been made by Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.
Meanwhile today’s ICC meeting did not oppose the Sri Lanka men’s and women’s team from taking part in tournaments or International matches.
But the ICC has also decided to stop the free flow of funding for as long as the ban stays and any dole out of funds will be made in keeping with certain conditions which will be specified in due course.
In another course of action, a group styling itself Cricket Fans of Sri Lanka have commenced a public platform calling for two million online signatures to have the ban imposed on Sri Lanka lifted.
