A political twist in Yatiyantota has voters raising eyebrows as the same candidate Anura, also known as Samantha is running under two different party banners: the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the People’s Struggle Alliance.
This unprecedented move comes from the Amanawala division of the Yatiyantota Pradeshiya Sabha. The District Returning Officer confirmed that the individual’s name appears on both party nomination lists, sparking questions over election protocols and oversight.
While legal experts and election monitors might see this as a clear violation of electoral norms, the Returning Officer noted that no formal petition had been submitted to disqualify the candidate during the nomination phase. As a result, Anura’s candidacy was allowed to proceed twice.
“If he wins under either party and someone challenges it in court, the victory could be declared void,” the official added, hinting at a post-election legal battle.
Until then, Anura/Samantha remains a curious symbol of electoral chaos or strategic audacity depending on who you ask.
