(COLOMBO) – A group of tourists escaped largely unhurt in a horrifying bus-rail crash in Southern Sri Lanka during the early hours of Wednesday, police and hospital officials said.
They said the bus was carrying tourists from the Southern resort town of Aluthgama some 61 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo when the incident took place at an unprotected railway crossing.
Two Czech nationals and the train driver sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene by para medics, they added.
The bus was heading for the Bandaranayake International Airport where the tourists were listed on a scheduled flight to take them out of the country.
Train accidents at unprotected railway crossings are common in the island nation despite repeated efforts by the police and authorities to create an awareness among motorists and other road users.
