In a chilling twist to the Sabaragamuwa University tragedy, four senior students have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the alleged torture of second-year undergraduates at the Faculty of Technology.
The arrests come after a formal complaint was lodged at the Samanala Wewa Police Station on April 29, 2025, sparking a full-scale probe into the brutal ragging practices that are believed to have driven a student to take his own life. The victim, a second-year student, reportedly suffered severe psychological trauma due to repeated abuse at the hands of senior students.
Following swift action, CID officials apprehended four third-year students earlier today (May 4), all of whom belong to the same faculty. The suspects are expected to be presented before the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, May 5, as investigations continue.
The incident has shocked the nation, reigniting public outrage over campus ragging and raising serious questions about the enforcement of anti-ragging laws in Sri Lanka’s higher education institutions. Both the victim’s family and fellow students have provided critical statements, with investigators probing deeper into the systematic abuse culture that still lurks within university walls.
Calls are now growing louder for urgent reforms and accountability, as this tragedy exposes the dark underside of campus life.
