As Indian cricket transitions into a new era, another stalwart has walked away from the longest format of the game. Rohit Sharma has officially called time on his illustrious Test career, marking the end of a chapter that saw him evolve from a stylish stroke-maker into a dependable leader. While Rohit takes his leave from red-ball cricket, all eyes remain on MS Dhoni, the legendary Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper, who is yet to make a final decision about his future in the IPL.
Dhoni, who will turn 44 next month, understands that his playing days are limited but is not rushing into any decisions just yet. Following CSK’s thrilling victory against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman shared his thoughts on what lies ahead.
“I only play two months in a year, and now after this IPL gets over, I have to work hard for another six to eight months just to see if my body will be able to take this kind of pressure and everything,” Dhoni remarked. “So nothing for me to decide as of now, but I feel the love and affection wherever I’ve been.”
Dhoni has been functioning at reduced capacity, with CSK head coach Stephen Fleming also admitting that his knees don’t allow him to bat for long. In this season, he has been coming late to bat. On Wednesday, he came in 13th over to bat at number 8 position.
That sentiment encapsulates the admiration and unwavering support Dhoni has received from fans across the cricketing world. Regardless of when he chooses to hang up his boots, his legacy is already cemented as one of the most successful captains in IPL history.
Statistically, Dhoni’s contributions behind the stumps are unparalleled. With an incredible 200 dismissals, including 153 catches and 47 stumpings—from IPL seasons spanning 2008 to 2025, he remains the most accomplished wicketkeeper the league has ever seen. His sharp reflexes, tactical acumen, and ability to guide bowlers under pressure have made him an indispensable force in CSK’s dominance over the years.
For now, the cricket fraternity waits with bated breath. Will IPL 2025 be Dhoni’s swansong, or will the veteran find another year within him? Only time will tell.
