The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka has issued a public warning over a surge in fake social media accounts impersonating U.S. Embassy officials, including Ambassador Julie Chung.
In a statement released today, the Embassy cautioned users to verify the authenticity of any account claiming to represent the U.S. Embassy or its officials. The public is urged not to engage with or rely on these impostor profiles, which have been misleading followers and potentially spreading false information.
“For accurate updates on the United States in Sri Lanka, we strongly encourage the public to follow Ambassador Julie Chung’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, @USAmbSL,” the statement read. “She does not have accounts on Facebook, Instagram, or Telegram, so if you see her there, it’s not the real deal!”
The Embassy emphasized that consular officers never contact individuals via social media or direct messaging regarding U.S. visa services, a common scam tactic seen in recent months.
To stay protected, the U.S. Embassy urged the public to only follow verified accounts:
- Ambassador Julie Chung on X: @USAmbSL
- U.S. Embassy on X: @USEmbSL
- Instagram: @USEmbSL
- Facebook: facebook.com/Colombo.USEmbassy
- Official Website: https://lk.usembassy.gov/
With misinformation on the rise, the Embassy urges Sri Lankans to remain vigilant and help stop the spread of fake identities online.
