In a move signaling renewed focus on economic strategy and international engagement, Parliament today appointed MP and Attorney-at-Law Lakmali Hemachandra as the Chairperson of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Economic Development and International Relations.
The committee convened for its inaugural session on the morning of May 22, during which Hemachandra’s name was formally proposed by MP Wijesiri Basnayake and seconded by MP Kandasamy Prabhu. Her appointment was confirmed with broad support from fellow committee members.
Joining her in this vital parliamentary assignment are MPs Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi, Sagarika Athauda (Attorney-at-Law), Nilanthi Kottachchi, and Thilina Samarakoon. Together, they are tasked with examining policy frameworks and promoting effective legislative oversight in the areas of economic growth, investment partnerships, and Sri Lanka’s international relations.
Observers note that the inclusion of experienced legal professionals and diverse political voices within the committee signals a strong commitment to analytical rigor and inclusive policy development.
As Sri Lanka seeks to navigate its path out of economic instability and reposition itself globally, the work of this newly-formed committee is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping future reform.
