Colombo, May 26 – Authorities have dismissed widespread rumours about a supposed ban on wearing bikinis in Arugam Bay, assuring both locals and tourists that no such law exists.
The controversy began after a message circulating on social media, allegedly from a group called “People of the Local Community in Arugam Bay,” claimed that wearing bikinis in public spaces was no longer permitted.
The post, written in a polite tone, read:
“Welcome to Arugam Bay! We are delighted to have you here and truly value your visit. To honour our local culture, we kindly request that you avoid wearing bikinis in public spaces. Your respect for our traditions means a lot to our community. Thank you for your understanding, and we hope you enjoy your time in beautiful Arugam Bay!”
The message sparked concern among travellers and business owners, as Arugam Bay is one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved coastal destinations, especially among surfers and beach lovers.
However, when contacted by the Daily Mirror, the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Pottuvil Police categorically denied that any official regulation or law had been implemented restricting beachwear. He confirmed that the viral message was not issued by any recognized authority and was instead shared by a private individual. The police have since launched an investigation into the origin and intent of the post.
Tourism authorities also expressed concern that such misinformation could damage Sri Lanka’s reputation as a welcoming and diverse travel destination. Arugam Bay, known for its golden beaches and world-class surf breaks, continues to attract thousands of international and domestic tourists each year.
Police and tourism officials have assured that there is no reason for alarm, and visitors are encouraged to enjoy Arugam Bay as usual—without fear of culturally misrepresented restrictions.
