Kandy – May 30, 2025 — The Indian owner of the Galle Marvels T10 franchise, Prem Thakkar, has been convicted and sentenced by the Kandy High Court after pleading guilty to match-fixing charges in connection with the 2024 Lanka T10 League.
Thakkar was handed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for ten years, along with a Rs. 6 million fine and an additional Rs. 1 million in compensation, following his conviction under the Sri Lankan Prevention of Offences in Sports Act.
The sentence was delivered after the court took into account a request made by the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit, which included permission to download and examine data from Thakkar’s mobile phone as part of the investigation.
The case marks a major development in Sri Lanka’s efforts to crack down on corruption in cricket, particularly in newer, fast-paced formats like T10.
Earlier this year, the Attorney General filed charges against West Indies cricketer Andre Fletcher, alleging that he was approached by Thakkar with an attempt to influence the outcome of a match involving the Galle Marvels during the December 2024 tournament.
The judgment is seen as a strong message to those attempting to corrupt the integrity of the sport in Sri Lanka and beyond.
