Galkiriyagama, May 30, 2025 — President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has pledged to fulfill what he described as an “irrevocable responsibility” to transform Sri Lanka’s global image from that of a criminal state plagued by political patronage into a respected, law-abiding, and prosperous nation.
Speaking at the opening of the relic house and unveiling of the Meth Bosath statue at the Siri Samadhi Maha Viharaya in Pahaminiyagama, Galkiriyagama, President Dissanayake addressed the crowd with a message of hope and accountability.
He noted that despite Sri Lanka’s rich natural resources and fertile land, the nation has suffered under decades of unplanned governance and corruption. He stated that the current government is working with determination to rebuild the national economy step by step, focusing on long-term development rather than short-term political gains.
“I will not allow Sri Lanka to be remembered as a failed or criminal state,” the President said. “I carry the responsibility to elevate this country’s image and dignity on the world stage.”
The President, attending the ceremony at the invitation of Venerable Kagama Sirinanda Thero, laid the first floral tribute at the newly opened shrine. He emphasized his lifelong dedication to public service, highlighting that he has never chased power for personal gain, but rather, has remained grounded in the experiences and suffering of the ordinary people.
Addressing the country’s drug crisis, the President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to eradicating drug abuse and trafficking, saying that steps are already being taken to strengthen institutional networks to combat related crimes effectively.
He further underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice applies equally to all citizens, regardless of status or influence.
The President also praised the role of the Buddhist clergy, especially the Maha Sangha, in shaping a healthy, moral, and compassionate society. He commended Venerable Kagama Sirinanda Thero for his religious and social service, calling it an inspiration for national progress.
The ceremony was attended by a distinguished group of religious and political figures, including the Anuradhapura Atamasthanadhipathi, Chief Sangha Nayaka of Nuwara Eliya, Most Venerable Pallegama Hemarathana Thero, senior monks from the Malwathu Chapter of the Siam Maha Nikaya, Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, and MP Thilina Samarakoon.
President Dissanayake concluded by reaffirming his administration’s focus on building a nation rooted in integrity, equality, and resilience, for the benefit of current and future generations.
