A significant internal rift has emerged within Independent Group No. 04, which contested the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) elections, regarding its support for the National People’s Power (NPP) in forming a governing alliance.
Several members of the group, addressing a press conference in Colombo, claimed that no collective decision had been made within their group to support the NPP. They emphasized that they were not consulted about any discussions or agreements to extend support to the government.
During the media briefing, the dissenting members stated that all but two members of the group were opposed to backing the NPP. They openly distanced themselves from the alleged deal and insisted that they remained committed to the principles under which they had contested.
Further intensifying the controversy, these candidates expressed suspicion that the two individuals who had sided with the NPP may have done so in exchange for monetary incentives. The accusation hinted at a possible case of political bribery, with claims that support was “bought” to shift loyalties in favor of the ruling faction.
The press conference concluded with the dissenting members reiterating that they will not recognize the support extended to the NPP as a decision of the full group, and they called for transparency regarding the dealings that led to this alleged betrayal.
