Shocking new reports from the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) have revealed dangerously high levels of heavy metals in several popular cosmetic creams and lotions sold in the Sri Lankan market.
Following laboratory testing of various skincare products, the CAA confirmed that many of the samples contained toxins well above the permissible safety limits as defined by national regulations. The specific brand names and their corresponding heavy metal content are now being disclosed alongside the official gazette notification detailing approved limits.
The CAA is now urging consumers to immediately stop purchasing and using creams and lotions that exceed the allowed levels of heavy metals. Exposure to such toxins—often found in skin-whitening products and moisturizers—can lead to serious health complications over time, including skin damage, organ toxicity, and even cancer.
Authorities have already begun legal action against vendors found selling these hazardous items. The CAA warns that the law will be strictly enforced to ensure consumer safety and accountability in the cosmetic industry.
Consumers are advised to check product labels carefully, follow updated safety notices issued by the CAA, and report any suspicious or unregulated cosmetics to local authorities.
