(COLOMBO) – A 62-year-old woman died instantly while attempting to save her pet dog from a fast moving train at a location north off the commercial capital Colombo on Wednesday, police said.
The woman identified only as ‘Biso Menike’ was heading home with her canine when the incident took place close to the Wellawa Railway Station situated some 51 kilometres from Colombo.
According to police the victim was returning home after visiting a friend’s home in the vicinity along with the dog.
Police quoted eyewitnesses as saying that she hurried on to the rail track to remove the dog when the train came crashing down on her.
She was pronounced dead on arrival to a nearby local State-operated hospital.
