SriLankan Airlines is planning to expand its fleet to 25 aircraft by the end of this year, with the addition of two new wide-body planes. This move is part of the national carrier’s broader strategy to enhance operations and improve connectivity on key international routes.
The airline recently welcomed a new Airbus A330-200 into its fleet under a lease agreement the first wide-body aircraft to be added in over seven years. This addition marks a significant milestone as SriLankan Airlines looks to strengthen its long-haul capabilities.
According to officials, plans are also underway to resume and increase the frequency of flights on several routes that have been either suspended or operating on a limited basis. These include select destinations in Europe and Asia.
While funding for the new aircraft has already been allocated in the national budget, acquiring suitable planes remains a challenge due to limited availability in the global aviation market.
The airline is especially looking to boost its presence in Europe by increasing flights to destinations such as Frankfurt, Germany. There are also plans to restart operations to Beijing, China, a key step in promoting tourism between Sri Lanka and East Asia.
Currently operating a fleet of 23 aircraft, SriLankan Airlines is positioning itself to better serve post-pandemic travel demand while supporting national tourism and trade goals.
