In a landmark decision, Vraie Cally Balthazaar of the National People’s Power (NPP) has been elected as the new Mayor of Colombo following a secret ballot held at the Colombo Municipal Council today.
The council, which met this morning, was tasked with choosing a mayor since no single party held a clear majority after the most recent local government election. The decision came down to the votes of the 117 council members, with Balthazar ultimately securing the majority required to lead the capital city.
The vote was overseen and formally certified by the Local Government Commissioner.
Meanwhile, Hemantha Kumara, representing the ruling party, was elected Deputy Mayor without contest.
This marks a significant political gain for the NPP, reinforcing its growing urban influence and control of key local government bodies.
