The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), one of Sri Lanka’s most influential trade unions, successfully held its 99th annual election on Saturday (June 28), re-electing Specialist Dr. Sanjeewa Tennakoon as President and Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa as Secretary.
The election saw over 60% voter turnout, a strong indicator of confidence in the current leadership. The voting was conducted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a designated hall next to the GMOA headquarters in Colombo, drawing medical professionals from across the country.
Alongside the reappointment of the top leadership, the election also decided 16 Directors General and 40 members of the Central Committee, shaping the future course of the medical trade union.
The re-election of Dr. Tennakoon and Dr. Sugathadasa is seen as a signal of continued direction and assertiveness in matters related to public health, medical reforms, and professional representation.
