(COLOMBO) – A senior official with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) was arrested after he is alleged to have a woman of Rs. 500,000 by promising a foreign employment opportunity in Romania, officials said.
They said the suspect was picked up by the Special Investigations Unit of the SLBFE after a woman complained that she had paid Rs. 500,000 in return for a safe passage and a job in Romania.
The suspect was arrested after he appeared before the SLBFE’s SIU that is handling investigations into the case.
The suspect faces charges of fraudulently obtaining money by promising employment overseas without a valid license, the officials said.
The suspect was subsequently produced before a local Magistrate on Thursday and released on two personal bonds Rs. 500,000 each and a cash bail of Rs. 10,000.
The SLBFE is the Government’s monitoring arm of the country’s foreign employment industry and sleaze among its officialdom is not uncommon with several similar cases reported in the past.
