Deputy Minister of Justice Sunil Watagala has defended President’s Secretary Nandika Sanath Kumanayake over the recent accident involving his official vehicle, clarifying that there was no legal violation despite his wife being in the car at the time.
Deputy Minister of Justice Sunil Watagala stated that there was no breach of the law in the use of President’s Secretary Nandika Sanath Kumanayake’s official vehicle, even though it was involved in a recent accident while transporting his wife.
Explaining the circumstances, Watagala said the President’s Secretary’s personal vehicle had been damaged, prompting the temporary use of the official car and driver to provide transportation for his wife.
The incident drew public attention as the President’s Secretary himself was not present in the vehicle at the time of the crash, which sparked speculation and controversy.
Watagala emphasized that while the government maintains a strict policy of punishing offenders regardless of their position, there was no wrongdoing in this instance.
He made these remarks during a program on Sirasa TV, adding that the matter had been blown out of proportion without considering the facts.
