Ex-NFL star Mark Sanchez is out of hospital and custody after a stabbing incident in Indianapolis left him with serious injuries and legal trouble. The former Jets QB turned Fox Sports pundit says recovery will be “a long process,” marking a dramatic turn for the onetime playoff hero.
Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez has been released from both hospital and custody following a stabbing incident in Indianapolis that left him with multiple wounds. The 38-year-old, who has been working as a pundit for Fox Sports since 2021, was treated for stab injuries to his torso before being processed at Marion County Jail, where police formally recorded his fingerprints and took a booking photograph as part of standard procedure. Upon his release, Sanchez spoke briefly to reporters, saying he was “slowly recovering” and describing his rehabilitation as “a long process.” He apologized for not being able to answer further questions, citing his condition and ongoing recovery.
The incident took place on Saturday, a day before Sanchez was scheduled to commentate on an NFL game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Las Vegas Raiders. According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were investigating what they described as a “physical disturbance” involving two adult men. Authorities confirmed that one man sustained lacerations, while the other—identified as Sanchez—suffered injuries consistent with stab wounds. In a follow-up statement, police said Sanchez had been arrested on charges including battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication. Fox Sports later confirmed his injuries in a statement, saying Sanchez was in stable condition and receiving medical care.
Sanchez rose to fame as the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, selected by the New York Jets. During his time with the Jets, he led the team to two consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances, becoming a key figure in their playoff runs. Over his ten-year NFL career—which also included stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and Washington Commanders—he threw for over 15,000 yards and recorded 86 touchdowns. Since retiring in 2019, Sanchez has transitioned into broadcasting, where he remains a familiar face in American football coverage.
