Former Minister Prasanna Ranatunga was arrested by Sri Lanka’s Bribery Commission this morning over a multimillion-rupee corruption scandal involving illegal appointments and misuse of public funds.
Former Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has been taken into custody by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on charges of financial misconduct. The arrest took place when he appeared before the Commission on Tuesday morning for questioning related to a major corruption probe.
According to investigators, Ranatunga is accused of unlawfully appointing a private brokerage firm to handle direct medical insurance services for employees of four institutions under the Ministry of Tourism. The move allegedly caused a financial loss amounting to Rs. 4,750,828.72 to the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation.
The case, which has been under investigation for several months, is one of several high-profile corruption inquiries linked to the misuse of state contracts during Ranatunga’s tenure. The former minister is expected to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court following his arrest.
