A respected Sri Lanka Air Force pilot lost his life during a critical disaster relief mission, marking one of the most heartbreaking moments of the ongoing emergency response.
Wing Commander Nirmal Siyambalapitiya, the captain of a Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter, was killed this afternoon when the aircraft crashed in the Lunuwila area of Wennappuwa during urgent disaster relief operations. The helicopter went down over Gin Oya while conducting its mission to support flood affected communities. Four others on board sustained injuries and have been hospitalised for treatment.
According to initial reports, the aircraft was engaged in continuous emergency operations that required rapid deployment across multiple zones. The crash has deeply shocked the Air Force and the wider public, coming at a time when aerial support and rescue missions remain vital for national disaster management and humanitarian response.

Hats off to Sirasa Shakti Sahana Yatra who rose to the occasion well ahead of others even the Govt.Their contribution is unexplainable. The cooperation of the staff irrespective of big or small all became one single solitary family. This is pure voluntary service.
