Legendary Australian rugby star David Campese, also called the Bradman of Rugby has arrived in Sri Lanka at the invitation of Zahira College to coincide with its 100-year celebration this year and will conduct a major coaching session for school coaches on Wednesday at the island’s home of rugby Longden Place in Colombo.
Zahira is one of the first schools in the country to play rugby along with Royal College and St. Peter’s College and Campese’s historic visit is considered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be coached by a celebrity as big as the winger and fullback who wore the Wallabies jersey in 85 Test matches for Australia and was in the World Cup champion team of 1991.
“Campese will do some leadership programmes covering attack, counter attack, kicking and catching. It is a stepping stone for all youngsters in the country who have a passion for rugby”, said an official of the Zahira College rugby committee.
All school coaches have been invited for Wednesday’s session.
To celebrate its Centenary year Zahira College has also organsied an Invitation Sevens tournament featuring the top schools in the country with the backing of the Leicester Tigers of the United Kingdom.
The event will get underway on March 2 and 3 at the Racecourse ground in Colombo and also feature schoolboy teams from Malaysia and Thailand.
