National People’s Power (NPP) Member of Parliament and attorney-at-law Lakmali Hemachandra has hit back at what she calls a wave of misinformation being spread by the opposition. Speaking during an appearance on the Derana Wadapitiya program, the outspoken MP made it clear: she never said she wouldn’t accept her parliamentary salary.
“There’s no statement from me, anywhere, saying I will not take a salary,” Lakmali asserted, adding that her salary will indeed be deposited into her account as normal.
Her remarks come in response to claims circulating from political opponents suggesting that she had vowed to reject her salary — a narrative she says is completely false and politically motivated.
Without mincing words, Lakmali accused the opposition of deliberately twisting her statements in an attempt to mislead the public and score cheap political points. “They’re lying,” she declared. “They know what I really said, and they’re distorting it.”
The NPP MP’s clarification has stirred strong reactions online, reigniting debate about political accountability, transparency, and the use of public funds — and putting the spotlight back on a parliament where words are often weaponized.
As the heat builds in the lead-up to future elections, Lakmali Hemachandra’s message is loud and clear: she’s not backing down, and she’s setting the record straight.
