Treasury official death sparks political row as Minister Susil Ranasinghe says opposition pressure contributed to Ranga Rajapaksa’s suicide.
The Treasury official death of Ranga Rajapaksa has sparked fresh political controversy after Minister Susil Ranasinghe claimed the opposition must be held directly responsible.
Ranasinghe said Rajapaksa, who had been suspended from service over financial fraud allegations at the Treasury, came under severe mental pressure after a group surrounded the Finance Secretary’s house.
The Minister stated that the opposition’s loud campaign and repeated allegations that many people were involved in the financial fraud created a situation where the relevant officials could not face society.
He further emphasized that unbearable social pressure had been placed on those officials through the opposition’s actions.
However, questions remain over how political pressure, public allegations, and official investigations should be handled when individuals connected to sensitive cases are under scrutiny.
Ranasinghe said the opposition must certainly take responsibility for this tragedy.
