(COLOMBO) A Sri Lankan drunken three-wheel driver was arrested after he allegedly bit and injured a senior police officer and his driver at a location in Embilipitiya some 162 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo, police said on Friday.
According to police the incident took place outside a supermarket and was being treated as assault triggered-off over a road rage incident.
Initial investigations have revealed that the suspect described as an ex-soldier became furious after the police officer’s driver had told him to move his three-wheeler that was obstructing his path.
This led to a heated argument between the suspect and the police officer. Subsequently the suspect had bitten the police officer’s hand and carried out the same attack on the police driver who had attempted to intervene, police said.
The suspect was later arrested and hospitalized for injuries sustained during the aftermath of the melee.
Investigators have found out that the suspect had been dismissed from the army for his alleged involvement in a murder case several years ago.
The police officer involved is a serving Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in charge of the division in which the incident took place and was not in uniform at the time of the incident.
