Supreme Court directs reissue of notice to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in fundamental rights petition over illegal compensation payments to former ministers and MPs.
The Supreme Court has directed that steps be taken to reissue notice to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He had been named as a respondent in a fundamental rights petition filed requesting an order to recover compensation money from former ministers and MPs who allegedly received payments unlawfully for damages caused to their homes following the violence that erupted across the country after the attack on the Galle Face protest on May 9, 2022.
The petition sought a ruling declaring that the compensation payments in question were illegal. When this petition was taken up for consideration, the Supreme Court ordered that a fresh notice be issued to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
