Kumara Jayakody has issued a legal notice demanding Rs. 500 million from Prasad Siriwardana over alleged defamatory financial claims.
Kumara Jayakody has issued a legal notice demanding Rs. 500 million in compensation from Mr. Prasad Siriwardana over what he says were baseless financial allegations made against him at a media briefing.
The former Minister of Power and Energy sent the notice through Attorney Sampath Yalewatte, claiming that Mr. Sirivardhana’s statements had caused serious damage to his personal reputation.
At a media briefing held on March 22, Mr. Prasad Siriwardana had alleged that the minister was involved in financial misconduct.
The legal notice states that Mr. Kumara Jayakody is a professional engineer with more than 30 years of service experience. It also emphasises that he voluntarily resigned from his ministerial post to allow an independent investigation into coal imports.
According to the lawyer, the statement was made deliberately to damage the reputation of the former minister and the National People’s Power party he represents.
The notice demands that the Rs. 500 million compensation for the alleged defamatory statement be paid within 14 days.
If the amount is not paid, the former minister has warned that legal action will be filed in court to recover the compensation, along with legal interest and court fees.
