(COLOMBO) – The strike by a large section of Sri Lanka’s State health workers since the start of this week was called-off on Thursday following fruitful negotiations with the relevant authorities, officials said.
After days of tense negotiations and widespread disruptions in healthcare services, all 72 health sector trade unions opted to call off their ongoing strike, they said.
The strike that crippled the State hospitals was launched by unions demanding an increase in their allowances.
The Government was later forced to call in the army to help out at the hospitals to ease the burden on the thousands of patients that depend on free medical care provided by the State.
The doctors and nursing staff however did not participate in the strike since their relevant demands had already been provided by the Government.
