Sri Maha Bodhi is at the center of controversy after reports of damage to a main branch emerged amid ongoing administrative disputes in Anuradhapura.
Sri Maha Bodhi has become the focus of fresh controversy following reports that a main branch of the sacred tree was damaged and subsequently concealed, according to claims made by an internet-based media channel.
The report alleges that serious damage was caused to a principal branch of the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura and that the broken section has now been secretly secured and stored at a separate location.
According to information disclosed by the channel, the incident occurred during an attempt to remove a branch from a surrounding Bodhi tree. During that process, damage was allegedly caused to one of the main branches of the Sri Maha Bodhi.
Reports further state that officials sought the assistance of a plant specialist from the Department of Botanical Gardens to remove the damaged sections following the incident.
It has also been revealed that the cut branch has reportedly been placed inside a location known as the Sannipatha Hall and kept under lock and key.
The development comes at a time when the Atamasthana administration is facing an ongoing institutional crisis and increasing public scrutiny.
Although the Maha Sangha Sabha of the Malwathu Chapter has temporarily suspended Pallegama Hemarathana Thero from his position and appointed another monk to perform duties in an acting capacity, reports indicate that decisions continue to be influenced by the accused monk.
Questions surrounding the administration of the sacred site have intensified in recent months following a series of controversies linked to activities carried out within the temple premises.
It was previously reported that terra cotta tiles had been laid on the sand courtyard surrounding the sacred tree without obtaining approval from the Department of Archaeology, raising concerns among observers about possible long-term impacts on the preservation and longevity of the Sri Maha Bodhi.
Meanwhile, reports also indicate that special religious observances are being organized at the site, including the traditional “Milk-Offering at Four Gates” ceremony.
According to the information available, these religious offerings are being prepared with the intention of removing misfortunes associated with the accused monk and seeking blessings ahead of an upcoming DNA test.
The latest claims regarding the damaged branch, together with the wider administrative disputes surrounding the Atamasthana, are likely to add further attention to an issue that continues to generate public interest and debate.
