Bangladesh W produced an important opening win over the Netherlands Women as they triumphed by six wickets in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 clash at Edgbaston.
The Netherlands, playing their first Women’s T20 World Cup match, won the toss and chose to bat first. They showed plenty of fight, but Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling attack kept control for most of the innings and restricted the Dutch side to 139/8 in 20 overs.
Babette de Leede was the standout performer for the Netherlands. The captain held the innings together with a composed 50 off 45 balls, giving her team a competitive total after early wickets had slowed their progress. Heather Siegers added 16, while Iris Zwilling and Silver Siegers provided useful late runs to push the score close to 140.
Bangladesh’s bowlers shared the responsibility well. Marufa Akter led the attack with 2/31, while the rest of the bowling unit maintained pressure and prevented the Netherlands from building big partnerships. Rabeya Khan also reached a personal milestone by taking her 50th T20I wicket.
In reply, Bangladesh were given a strong platform by Juairiya Ferdous. The opener played with confidence and attacking intent, striking 50 off 32 balls with seven fours and two sixes. Her positive approach helped Bangladesh stay ahead of the asking rate early in the chase.
However, the match briefly swung back towards the Netherlands when Bangladesh slipped from 67/0 to 85/4. Caroline de Lange struck twice in two balls, removing Ferdous and captain Nigar Sultana, before Silver Siegers dismissed Dilara Akter for 26.
With the chase under pressure, Sharmin Akhter and Shorna Akter showed calmness in the middle. The pair added an unbeaten 56-run partnership, guiding Bangladesh safely to the target with five balls remaining. Sharmin finished unbeaten on 37, while Shorna remained 18 not out.
Bangladesh reached 141/4 in 19.1 overs to seal a six-wicket victory and begin their World Cup campaign on a winning note. For the Netherlands, there was disappointment in defeat, but their fighting display with the ball showed they can compete at this level.
